Marc Schenker, WCAHS Director, Retiring

Dr. Marc Schenker, Director of the Western Center for Agricultural Health andSafety (WCAHS), is retiring at the end of June.

Dr. Schenker founded the WCAHS, one of the original two National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health Agricultural Centers.  There are now 11 regional centers covering the United States. WCAHS’s region includes Arizona, California, Hawai’i, and Nevada. Dr. Schenker has directed WCAHS for over 25 years.

Protecting Dairy Workers from Infectious Disease

California is the number one milk producing state in the US, producing 19% of the nation’s milk. The California Department of Food and Agriculture reports that California has more than 1,300 dairy farming families, with over 1.75 million milk cows.

WCAHS Education and Outreach Expands

WCAHS Education and Outreach received a five-fold increase in funding with the 2016-2021 grant renewal and is putting these new resources to good use.  From October 2016 to April 2017, over 650 individuals were reached through WCAHS related educational events.  Audiences included farmers, farmworkers, farm labor contractors, extension staff, promotores, academics, policy makers, non-profit organizations, and the general public.
